The Full Picture

The Boston Fern is notorious for dropping dry, crispy little leaflets all over your floor. This is a cry for help: it means the air is too dry or the soil was allowed to dry out. Ferns do not have deep root systems to store water. You must keep the soil evenly moist at all times (but not sitting in mud) and provide as much ambient humidity as possible. If the center of the plant is dying, it usually means water isn't reaching the middle of the dense root ball.
