The Full Picture
The Chinese Elm is the gold standard for bonsai beginners because it is incredibly hard to kill and responds rapidly to pruning. Unlike the finicky Fukien Tea, the Elm can tolerate slight over or underwatering. It is technically an outdoor tree, so it prefers to be on a bright balcony rather than a dim coffee table. Don't panic if it drops its leaves in winter; it's a natural semi-deciduous resting phase.
