Planting 20% of your cotton area with non-Bt (refuge) cotton is a government requirement, not optional. Refuge rows maintain a population of susceptible bollworm moths that mate with any resistant moths, diluting resistance genes in the population. Farmers who skip refuge rows risk contributing to Bt resistance breakdown — which would eliminate the biggest benefit of BT cotton for all farmers.
