The Full Picture
The String of Hearts looks delicate, but it is actually a semi-succulent that grows from a potato-like tuber under the soil (called a caudex). This means it holds massive amounts of water. If you overwater it, the tuber will rot and the entire plant will die instantly. Wait to water until the soil is completely bone dry, and gently squeeze a leaf—if the leaf feels soft and slightly foldable (like a taco), it's time to water. If it feels firm, leave it alone!
