How to prune a lemon tree in a pot?
Prune lemon trees after the main fruiting flush — typically February–March. Remove dead, crossing, and inward-facing branches first. Shorten long stems by one-third to encourage bushy growth. Remove water shoots (fast-growing vertical shoots) near the base. Sterilise pruning shears with rubbing alcohol between cuts. Avoid heavy pruning in summer. After pruning, feed with citrus fertiliser to support new growth.
