Why are plant stems turning black at the base?

Black, mushy stem base is damping off or collar rot — caused by Pythium or Sclerotinia fungi thriving in waterlogged soil. Remove affected plants immediately to stop spread. Allow soil to dry, then drench with a copper fungicide solution. Use well-draining cocopeat-based mix to prevent recurrence.
